The tool of the week is…

Vibe Check
I heard a name I hadn’t heard in a long time, and it was the name of a marketplace founder. Probably the most infamous one…
The headline I saw was “Trump pardons Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht for online drug scheme,” and it brought me way back to the early 2010s. In 2011, Ross, under the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts," founded the dark web marketplace Silk Road. It was a place where you could buy and sell illegal drugs and other illicit goods/services anonymously using Bitcoin and delivered through the mail. With supply, you couldn’t get anywhere else; it was an instant hit with classic market pull and organic growth.
In its 2.5 years in business, the marketplace produced $213.8 million in GMV and $13M in net revenue (~6.1% take rate), making it probably one of the fastest-growing marketplaces outside of Temu. It also didn’t take any VC money.
It has been over a decade since the Silk Road started, and the world looks slightly different. Crypto is becoming mainstream; cannabis is legal for recreational use in 24 states (and many countries), and there are now functioning online marketplaces for cannabis.
What can we learn?
Being too early is the same as being wrong (in this case, illegal).
Aggregating a supply type that you can’t readily get irl and bringing it online is a powerful combination.
Lowering coordination costs through logistics solutions (mail) improves liquidity (didn’t have to meet up with sketchy dealers).
Fast and frictionless payments increase transactions (bitcoin).
Trust is the cornerstone of all commerce at scale.
Now, on to the news!
If you haven’t read it, the two-part piece on Silk Road from Wired is riveting: Part 1 and Part 2.
The Highlight of the Week
Agent-led marketplaces are coming! This week, OpenAI launched a big update that is particularly exciting for marketplaces: Operator. The product aims to “transform AI from a passive tool to an active participant in the digital ecosystem. It will streamline tasks for users and bring the benefits of agents to companies that want innovative customer experiences and higher conversion rates”.
It is an AI agent that can use browsers to interact with websites. What is exciting is that OpenAI with marketplaces like Tripadvisor, Booking.com, eBay, Etsy, DoorDash, Instacart, OpenTable, Priceline, StubHub, Thumbtack, Uber, Hipcamp, CNaught and others.
